The Montana State Liquor Warehouse is a structural steel building with a 33,600 sf footprint and a final building height of 65’ and 420’ long. This was designed to provide ample space for a state-of-the-art automated racking system to fill the interior of the building. This automated racking system will provide roughly 4,800 new spots to temporarily store pallets of liquor for the State of Montana before being distributed across the state.

A large part of this design was driven by the automated racking system and the functionality of the current facility. There is nothing else like this in the state and very few in the United States, so it was important for the team to construct the building around the automated racking system. The building included a 60’ wide x 65’ tall section that would house the automated racking system and a lower section that was 20’ wide x 30’ tall that would accommodate a smaller stand alone racking system and an area for the forklifts to move product.

The shell of the building was designed using Kingspan Insulated panels, achieving an excellent overall thermal rating and a straight forward install. The intent was to try and blend the new building in with the existing building for continuity between the two buildings, and the team did a great job at doing so.

The design of this building was a straightforward thought process: take the needs of the State of Montana Liquor Warehouse and the size requirements of the automated racking system and build that into a large building that works for everyone. The team nailed this and made for a very successful project.
